Large Neapolitan oval tray, Poulard Prad, circa 1830-35 A large oval Naples, Poulard Prad tray, circa 1830-35 Decorated by Raffaele Giovine in polychrome colours with people dancing the Tarantella in a naturalistic landscape with a building in the background, musicians at the side and seated in the foreground, all within an elaborate gilt and gilt-relief border, 37cm diam, Le 18-6 to the reverse Provenance Italian Private Collection Literature A.Carola-Perrotti, Le Porcellane Napoletane dell'Ottocento, 1807-1860, cat.no. 165, (also illustrated in colour) Angela Carola-Perrotti describes that the scene of the 'Tarantella' is perhaps one of the most successful compositions by Saverio della Gatta, and one of the most popular scenes in the oeuvre of Raffaele Giovine, the most famous painter of porcelain at the time. The scene can be found too on the large 'Gardiniera' table, dated 1829, in the Museo di Capodimonte. The author further points out that this remarkable tray was part of ta tete-a-tete now in a different private collection, also illustrated in the same publication (op.cit. cat.no. 164).
