Lot no. 21
21. A large Meissen "qilin" decorated deep dish, circa 1735
Decorated with a phoenix descending upon a qilin among indianische Blumen and scattered insects to the well and border, within a Sulkowski-Ozier moulded rim, 42cm diam., crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue, Dreher's mark "+" to inside footrim,
As noted by Julia Weber, the "qilin" decoration at Meissen was derived from a Chinese famille verte pattern that has been pared back with large reserves of undecorated ground to resemble Japanese Kakiemon-style decoration. For more information on wares with this decor and for more examples of this plate in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, see J. Weber, Meissener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbildern, vol. II, 2013, p. 370.
