Provenance
Private Collection, Italy
The present painting is based on one of the original versions of Madonna dell'Albero by Cesare da Sesto, now housed at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan (inv. nap. 962; Reg. Cron. 326). For further details on the other versions, see M. Carminati, Cesare da Sesto 1477-1523, Rome, 1994, pp. 176-179.
This work beautifully depicts the Madonna and Child beneath a tree, a symbol of the Tree of Life. The composition reflects Cesare da Sesto's deep connection to Leonardo da Vinci's style, characterised by soft chiaroscuro and tender, delicate figures.
