Lot no. 217
217. Workshop of Hubert Robert (Paris 1733-1808)
The Old Solario Bridge
oil on canvas
oil on canvas
62.8 x 78.2cm (24 3/4 x 30 13/16in).
Provenance
Private Collection, France
The present lot is to be related to a similar painting of same subject realized by Hubert Robert, now at the National Gallery of Washington of Art (Samuel H. Kress Collection Inv. 1952.5.50).
Both works represent the Ponte Solario, one of the oldest bridges in Rome.
Compared to the Washington painting, the present lot shows the bridge from a lower viewpoint. Some other differences are also noticeable in the details such as the attitudes of the figures. Moreover, the wooden boat, which in the American painting can be seen in the distance, has been brought closer and appears close to the shore, where a group of men are ready to welcome the fishermen.
