22. Nguyen Huyen (Vietnamese, 1915-1994) Return to the village 1955 signed and dated huyen 55 (lower left) ink and colours on silk 25 x 31 cm (9 7/8 x 12 1/4 in) Provenance Private collection, France. Graduating from the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine in 1936, Nguyen Huyen co-founded the Vietnam Fine Arts Association. He is renowned for his iconic work featured on the 100 dong banknote issued in 1946, which depicts a farmer working in a field alongside a striking blue buffalo. This note symbolised Vietnamese agriculture and production. As a student at the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, Nguyen Huyen mastered European oil painting techniques. He interpreted Vietnamese landscapes using an Impressionist-influenced colour palette and solid European painting techniques.
