Executed when Rembrandt Bugatti was only sixteen, Two Cows Following Each Other, One Grazing as it Walks already demonstrates remarkable technical mastery and exceptional artistic sensitivity. The free, almost impressionistic treatment of the modelling gives the animals a living presence, animated by a subtle interplay of volumes and surfaces. The two cows appear to be captured in a natural, continuous movement, one following the other, the first grazing as it walks, in a scene of great simplicity yet imbued with truth.
An emblematic subject in Bugatti's work, the animal here becomes a veritable vector of plastic and emotional expression. Despite its precocious nature, this work already reveals the artist's singular vision, based on an attentive and deeply empathetic observation of the animal world. The only known example to date, it stands out as much for its rarity as for the remarkable precociousness of its creator.
