Literature
Frédéric Masson, La Porcelaine de Sèvres, collection Chappey, in Les Arts 38 (Februar 1905), p.3 and p.6 (illustrated)
Rosalind Savill, The Wallace Collection, Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, I, p. 88, note ss., where the author refers to a typescript kept in J.Paul Getty Centre for the History of Art and the Humanities, Catalogue de la Collection d'anciennes porcelaines de Sèvres appartenant à Mr. E. Chappey . The pair of vases is there listed being of the second or the third size, white ground with gilded scrolls and landscapes, 1780, painted Rosset and Vincent (evidently misidentifying the Rosset in error).
These vases were in the celebrated collection of Edouard Chappey (about 1858 - 1907). Part of the collection was discussed, together with that of the Dukes of Westminster, amongst others, in the illustrated magazine Les Arts, in February 1905. The entire collection was subsequently dispersed in four sales, Catalogue des objets d'art et d'ameublement, anciennes porcelaines de Sèvres, pâte tendre, de saxe, de Chine... Chinese jades and rock crystals, display cases, fans, tobacco rapes, sculptures, bronze clocks and furniture from the collections of the late Mr Edouard Chappey at Galerie G. Petit. Petit, the first sale taking place from 11 to 15 March 1907, the second sale from 29 April to 3 May 1907, the third sale from 27 to 31 May 1907 and the fourth sale from 5 until 7 June, 1907, with a total of 1923 lots.
The form of these vases is known in three sizes and is listed as 'Vase hollandois' in the Sèvres factory records, they were intended for planting and growing bulbs. The pierced separate stands allowed for watering the growing bulbs through the larger holes at the top of the rim.
Please note it has been suggested the bases of the vases are likely 19th century hard-paste replacements that match the original vases very well.
