Lot no. 235
235. Carved oak figure probably representing the Virgin of the Annunciation, Flanders, 14th/15th century
Gesneden eikenhouten figuur die waarschijnlijk de Maagd van de Annunciatie voorstelt, Vlaanderen, 14de/15de eeuw.
A carved of figure of probably the Virgin of the Annunciation, Flemish, 14th/15th century.
H.56 cm
Our Virgin is similar to the Vierge de Merck-Saint-Liévin in the Musée de l'Hôtel Sandelin in Saint-Omer (Inv. 8136). This sculpture most certainly represents a Virgin of the Annunciation, as shown by her gesture of surprise and acceptance. The fluidity of the drapery, the swaying pose and the gracefulness of the elongated, sinuous figure are typical of the 14th and 15th centuries in Flanders and Artois.
