Born in 1939 in the lively district of Xipamanine in Lourenço Marques, now Maputo, Samate Mulungo has embodied artistic self-didacticism since 1952, the year in which he began his creative journey. His path, marked by a significant contribution to the field of contemporary painting, has been shaped over the decades.
Having spent many years working for a shipping company affiliated to the Ports and Railways of Mozambique, Mulungo finally embraced his artistic destiny in 1972. It was a decision that catalysed a significant evolution in his artistic expression.
His first solo exhibition, in 1959 at Lourenço Marques, was the genesis of a prolific career. In 1991, his artistic expertise was sought as a member of the jury for the "Heritage 1991" event at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, thus establishing his international reputation.
Mulungo's work transcends the boundaries of self-taught art, offering a visual dialogue deeply rooted in Mozambican culture and experience. His work, unveiled to the public in solo exhibitions, reflects a constant exploration of his artistic identity, oscillating between history and innovation.
