Jan Pauwel Gillemans, the elder (Antwerp 1618-1675) Fruit and Prawns in a Pewter Dish, a Goldsmith's Cup and a Ceramic Bowl, Bread and a Lemon on the Table signed 'Gil*ean*' (lower left) oil on canvas indistinctly signed 'Gil*ean*' (lower left) oil on canvas 63.5 x 79.3cm (25 x 31 1/4in). Born in Antwerp, where he originally trained as a goldsmith, Jan Pauwel Gillemans the Elder later specialized as a still-life painter, becoming a member of the local guild of St. Luke in 1647/8, where his father was a master. He was clearly influenced by Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-1684) and his workshop, who were active in Antwerp from mid-1630s. Two comparable works by Gillemans are listed on the RKD database: Still life with tropical fruits, oysters, and crabs, formerly with Kunsthandel Xaver Scheidwimmer, Munich, image no. 438215; and Still Life, image no. 84462.
