25. Attributed to Pierre Dulin (Paris 1669-1748) Vertumne and Pomona signed 'mignard/***' (lower right) oil on canvas 91.8 x 72.8cm (36 1/8 x 28 11/16in). Provenance Private Collection, France Pierre Dulin's life was marked by official recognition and a successful career, but he was subsequently forgotten. Twice winner of the Prix de Rome in 1696 and 1697 with subjects taken from the story of Joseph at the Pharaoh's, he later became an academician in 1707. He was commissioned to illustrate the coronation of Louis XV in Reims on 25 October 1722 with drawings, now preserved in the Department of Graphic Arts at the Louvre, which were then engraved. The present composition depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses (XIV:623-697): the god Vertumnus, disguised as an old woman, wooing the beautiful nymph Pomona, the goddess of fruit and orchards. Dulin captures the intimacy and charm of the moment, with Pomona attentively listening as Vertumnus reveals his true identity.
