The link between China, Vienna, and Florence is evident in the decoration and form of the present lot. "Bird and branch"-type decoration was very popular at the du Paquier manufactory, as this plate, circa 1722-34, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art illustrates (object number 1995.268.280). The floral decoration of this coffee pot was inspired by Chinese famille verte porcelain dating from the Kangxi period (1662 to 1722). Famille verte wares were among the most prized east Asian wares and as such were copied early on by Europe's porcelain manufactories, of which Meissen's Brühl "Garniture de Cheminée" from 1730 is another example (sold at Bonhams London, 7 December 2011, lot 76).
The shape of the coffee pot, with its domed lid, tapered handle, elongated neck, and floriated bridge recall porcelain wares from the Ming Dynasty, such as this 16th-century ewer in the British Museum, London (inv. Franks.3123).
Doccia's close ties with both the Meissen and Du Paquier factories influenced its decoration during the so-called "first period" from 1737-1758, as artists such as Carl Wendelin Anreiter von Ziernfeld and Giorgio delle Torri were poached by the Marchese Ginori from these factories to work at Doccia.
