A painter of history and mythological compositions, allegorical subjects and genre scenes, Ranvier trained at the studio of Irénée Richard and Jean Louis Janmot, beginning to exhibit at the Paris Salon in 1859. From Janmot, himself a pupil of Ingres, the artist inherited an interest in painting in line with classicism and the tradition of the great masters, but was also capable of renewal in content and style.
