Joseph Marie Vien (Montpellier 1716- 1809 Paris) Priam leaving to beg Achilles to give him back Hector's body signed and dated 'jo. m. vien 1782' (on the mat, lower left) black stone, red chalk, watercolour and white highlights on paper, laid to square signed and dated 'jo. m. vien 1782' (on the carpet, lower left) black, red chalk, watercolour and heightened with white on paper, squared 53.3 x 69.4cm (21 x 27 5/16in). This present work is a preparatory study for the painting of the same subject commissioned by the Comte d'Angiviller in 1779 to Vien. The finished oil painting was exhibited at the Salon of 1783, deposited in the Musée d'Alger in 1872 and has since been lost. However, a bozzetto, oil on canvas, was formerly in the Lagerfeld Collection and sold at Christie's, New York, 23 May 2000, lot 5 (see Th. Gaethgens and J. Lugand, Joseph-Marie Vien Peintre du roi (1716-1809), Paris, 1989, p. 201 and fig. 249). Another drawing in pen and brown ink of the same subjet is now at the Musée des Beaux Arts, Bézier (inv. 2040)(see Th. Gaethgens and J. Lugand, ibid, Paris, 1989, p. 249, no. 124).
