Lot no. 302
302. An early 19th century French brass quarter striking Capucine travelling clock with alarm Of typical form with flattened handle on an urn finial over a bell and four turned finials, hinged side doors, solid rear door and turned toupie feet. The 8.5cm enamel Roman dial within a cast ropetwist bezel, minute track, bold Breguet style hands and tapering alarm setting hand. The going barrel movement with tic-tac escapement with silk suspension and polished steel strike work mounted on the backplate. 27cm high Capucine clocks are early French travel clocks, precursors to the more refined carriage clock, popular during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Typically rectangular in shape, they often feature decorative finials and a prominent bell mounted above the case for striking. The name Capucine likely derives from the French word capuche (hood), referencing the clock's protective top or handle. These clocks were known for their portability, durability, and striking mechanisms, making them practical and elegant companions for travel.
