A very fine and rare third quarter of the 18th century French gilt and patinated bronze musical mantel clock Julien Le Roy, Paris. The case by Jean-Joseph de Saint Germain. The signed 4.5 inch white enamel Roman and Arabic dial with good gilt hands within a beaded bezel and set on a stack of three books, and a folded paper engraved with the signs of the Zodiac, to the left sits Urania in Classical robes and holding a spyglass in her lowered right hand, a starry globe at her feet, all set on a low rectangular base with heavy cast berried laurel swags tied by a ribbon, on a shaped base with applied 'guilloche' decoration, on large bun feet; the front and rear panels with silk-backed pierced frets and opening doors. The circular clock movement signed around the lower edge Julien LeRoy, AParis, with silk suspension and numbered outside countwheel strike on a bell; with lead-off wire to activate the musical movement below on the hour; the tune played on 12 stacked graduated bells and 22 hammers driven by a large wire fusee movement wound from the side 48cms (19ins) high.
