311. 311W Fine gilt bronze Transition period clock by Viger, Paris
A fine and rare mid to late 18th century French ormolu mantel clock
Viger, Paris
The waisted case surmounted by a berried branch and lyre resting against some books, over foliate-cast sides, harebells to the front and a ribbon tied base, each foot cast in the form of a dog, the centre frieze set with the head of a philosopher. The large 6 inch white Roman and Arabic dial with good pierced and engraved gilt hands and set within a well cast bezel set with a hook, perhaps to imitate a pocket watch in a stand (?). The large twin rain movement with flat-bottomed plates, silk suspension and heavy outside countwheel strike on a bell 51cms (20ins) high.
