Lot no. 311
311. [Apollo 12] "TOURIST" PHOTOGRAPH OF ALAN BEAN NEAR HALO CRATER: "Look over here at me and smile!" Pete Conrad, 14–24 November 1969, EVA 2 Printed 1969. Vintage gelatin silver print on fibre-based paper [NASA image AS12-49-7281]. With NASA credit stamp dated "11-18-69" on the reverse (issued by NASA Kennedy Space Centre, Florida). 20.3 x 25.4 cm. (8 x 10 in.). Historical context A Rare "Tourist" Photograph on the Moon Pete Conrad captured this magnificent portrait of Alan Bean on the way to Halo Crater, making it one of the few "tourist" photographs taken during the Apollo program. Unlike more technical imagery, Conrad carefully planned this shot to capture a personal moment of their lunar journey. 133:15:25 Conrad: I'll tell you what. Let's see, we're cross-Sun, right? (Preparing to take a tourist picture) Look over here at me and smile. Conrad's reflection is beautifully visible in Bean's visor, adding depth to this striking image. To Bean's left, the Hand Tool Carrier is seen resting on the lunar surface, holding the tools they used for geological sampling. "We didn't take too many tourist photographs; in fact, nobody did. [...] We didn't emphasize the human aspect enough, and I tell you it was a mistake." Alan Bean (Schick and Van Haaften, p. 100) Literature Voices from the Moon, Chaikin, introduction; Full Moon, Light, plate 49
