(8 x 10 in.) Historical context The Apollo 13 mission patch stands as a powerful representation of the resilience and determination that defined NASA's most challenging mission. Designed before the ill-fated flight, the emblem represents Apollo, the sun god of Greek mythology, symbolizing how the Apollo flights have extended the light of knowledge to all mankind. Three galloping horses symbolize the strength, courage, and speed of the Apollo program as it pushed the boundaries of space exploration. The Latin motto "Ex Luna, Scientia" translates to "From the Moon, Knowledge", reflecting the mission's original scientific goals. Below, the Apollo 13 Command and Service Module (CSM) is shown traveling toward its intended destination. Though Apollo 13 never reached the lunar surface, the mission became an icon of human ingenuity and survival, demonstrating the heroic efforts of the crew and NASA engineers in overcoming a near-catastrophic failure and safely bringing the astronauts back home.
