In 1831, the Literary Gazette wrote: 'Mr Macdonald is one of the most distinguished ornaments of the British school of sculpture.' He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London from 1828 to 1857, at the Scottish Academy from 1827 to 1865 and at the Great Exhibition of 1851. From 1832 until his death, he lived in Rome.
