Of German origin, Charles Guillaume Diehl (d.1885) established his workshop in Paris, rue Saint-Sebastien, in 1840. Soon, he successfully produced a wide quantity of precious objects as liqueur cabinets, coffrets, game boxes, jewellery caskets and an array of utilitarian furnishings, both standard pieces and high level fine objects, which soon were winning awards and prizes in the international exhibitions. By 1870 Diehl employed more than six hundred craftsmen in his atelier.
A related cigar cabinet signed by Diehl is in the collections of the Musée de la Seita, Paris, No. 696. An almost identical oak cigar cabinet on stand signed by Diehl was sold Christie's, the Decorative Arts Sale, Paris, 4 April 2012, lot 95 (€10,625), while another one of the same model but veneered in ebonised fruitwood was sold Christie's, London, The Collector's sale, 14 November 2018, lot 667 (£20,000).
