34. STATUETTE DE BOUDDHA COURONNÉ EN ALLIAGE DE CUIVRE DORÉ TIBET, XIVE/XVE SIÈCLE Himalayan Art Resources item no. 4872 17.8 cm (7 in.) high A GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF CROWNED BUDDHA TIBET, 14TH/15TH CENTURY 西藏 十四/十五世紀 銅鎏金寶冠佛像 Provenance: With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970s This sculpture illustrates the strong Newari aesthetic that was imported into Tibet from the Kathmandu Valley around the 13th century. The horizontal hairline across the forehead, the wide face with rounded features, the shortened neck, and the broad musculature of the shoulders with a tapered waist are indicative of strong Nepalese stylistic traits. Originating in India, the crowned Buddha trope became a popular subject for Newari artists, who in turn transmitted their sculptural traditions into Tibet. Comparisons in the hemline and drape of the Buddha's robes can be made with 14th century bronzes from the Nepalese school in Tibet (von Schroeder, Buddhist Sculptures in Tibet, Vol. II, 2001, pp. 962-3, nos. 231A-C.
