342. Jean-Joseph Eléonore Antoine Ansiaux (Liège 1764-1840 Paris) Louis Philippe makes allegiance before the flag of France signed and dated 'A***ux /f. 1830' (lower left) oil on canvas signed and dated 'A***ux /f. 1830' (lower left) oil on canvas 79.2 x 108.2cm (31 3/16 x 42 5/8in). Provenance Said to be purchased from a museum in Mahon, Menorca by Private Collection, Spain A pupil of François-André Vincent (1746-1816), Ansiaux was born in Liège in 1764. His works, taken from sacred and profane history, and poetical subjects, are numerous, and place him among the best artists of the French school in the 19th century. He also painted portraits of several distinguished political figures, ministers, and generals of Napoleon. Louis Philippe was sworn in as King Louis-Philippe I on 9 August 1830, after the abdication of Charles X, and ruled until 1848.
