35. 35AR ISABELLE DE BORCHGRAVE(1946-2024)
Red Sky, 2024
Signed and dated
Acrylic and gouache on pleated paper
87 x 135 cm
Pleating is a veritable trademark and determines most of Isabelle de Borchgrave's pictorial and sculptural work. Inspired by the pleated fabric of Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949, textile designer), synonymous with elegance, luxury and sensuality in the early 1900s, Isabelle de Borchgrave's series of pleated works seizes on the codes of this technique and creates anamorphes on flat paper to reveal a result modified by the puckering of the paper.
The origin of this pleating can be found in the large painting Garden Tree (lot 69 in the sale). It represents an abstract work inspired by the fields of the Belgian coast at sunset.
