A WOOD NETSUKE OF A YAKKO (PORTER/FOOTMAN) PERFORMING 'THE SPARROW DANCE'
By Shojusai, late 18th century
The yakko at leisure, standing, scantily-clad in a loin cloth and short jacket, open at the waist, exposing his huge protuberant abdomen and drooping chest, balancing on his right leg about to pirouette, both arms raised and gripping the edges of both sleeves, imitating the wings of a sparrow, his eyes double inlaid; signed on the reverse, along the left side Shojusai. 8.2cm (3¼in) high.
