Soubeiran de Pierres, Montpellier before 1927 Private Collection, France The putto at the far left of the present composition is based on the same figure in the Triumph of the Infant Bacchus by Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), now in the Kunsthaus, Zurich (acc. no. KS 39). The work was likely presented to the artists Cornelis and Lucas de Wael upon Van Dyck's departure from Genoa in 1627 (see S. J. Barnes, Van Dyck. A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, New Haven 2004, pp. 168-169, no. II.24, ill.). The authorship of this painting remains a matter of scholarly debate. While some have attributed it to the Genoese artist Andrea Vassallo (active c. 1640), Camillo Manzitti has suggested the Flemish painter Jan Roos (1591-1638). Both of these artists were active in Van Dyck's Genoese circle and engaged in similar mythological compositions. When the work was offered at auction at Anderson Galleries, New York, on the 8 December 1927 (lot 118), it was catalogued as a work by Jakob de Wit (1695-1754), reflecting the fluid nature of its attribution over time.
