Georges Rouault (1871-1958) occupies a singular place in twentieth-century art.
Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Gustave Moreau's studio, he soon developed a powerful pictorial language, recognisable by its thick black outlines and intense colours reminiscent of medieval stained glass.
Close to Fauvism in his early years, Rouault soon moved away from it to create a deeply personal body of work, marked by spiritual and humanist reflection.
His subjects reflect the same compassion for the human condition.
Somewhere between expressionism and mysticism, his work combines dramatic force and interiority, making him one of the major artists of French modernism.
The four works presented in this sale bear witness to this unique pictorial style, which is at once intense, luminous and deeply emotional.
