4. * A carved marble head of a man, Southern Italy, circa 1200-1230 Eyes encrusted with lead; resting on a later blackened wooden base Our head is similar to a crowned marble head of a woman from southern Italy, dated circa 1270 and held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (47.100.53a). A later work in the Musée de Cluny (CL11115) also features lead inlays in the eyes of the head of the Teaching Doctor, Bologna ? circa 1340. The function of our head remains unknown to this day. Was it a solemn representation of a deceased person that could have been placed on a funerary monument? 14 wide, 14cm deep, 20cm high (5 1/2in wide, 5 1/2in deep, 7 1/2in high) total high including base 40cm Provenance Bought from Galerie Chenel, Paris in 2008
