Lot no. 41
41. FRÉDÉRIC BAZILLE (1841-1870) Undergrowth at Chailly, Forest of Fontainebleau signed with the artist's initials, inscribed and dated 'Chailly 1865 F. B' (lower left) oil on canvas Painted in 1865 40.5 x 27 cm. The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Michel Schulman. This work is listed under no. MSb-284 in the online Catalogue Raisonné. Provenance The artist's family. Collection Général Cazalis, France (husband of Thérèse des Hours, Bazille's cousin). Probably Galerie Blot, Paris. Horndasch Collection, Germany. Private collection. Here, Bazille took care to date, localise and monogram his painting. We can feel the influence of the Barbizon painters, whom he almost certainly met at the Auberge du Cheval Blanc in Chailly or the Auberge Ganne in Barbizon, unless it was at a bend in the road or in a forest clearing. Here, he is painting a sort of clearing, with a slightly dark foreground bordered by rocks and trees against a luminous sky. The same year - and certainly the same summer - Bazille returned to this subject in his Landscape at Chailly at the Art Institute of Chicago, in a masterly rendering of the light, the shape of the sandstone rocks and the summer dryness of the place. -Michel Schulman-
