Literature
A. Busiri Vici, Peter, Hendrik e Giacomo Van Lint, Rome 1987, p. 57, cat. nos. 34 and 35
Son of the history painter Pieter van Lint (1610-1690) and pupil of Peeter van Bredael (1629-1719), Hendrick moved from his hometown, Antwerp, to Rome in 1697.
Here he joined the Bentvueghels, an association of Dutch and Flemish artists and became one of the leading vedute painter in the first half of the 18th century. His patrons included Rome's old aristocratic families as well as European and English travellers and visitors to Rome such as the Earl of Buckinghamshire, who would have acquired them during his Grand Tour.
As Busiri Vici stated, the present pair shows two vedute of principle monuments of 'The Eternal City' emerging from the surrounding greenery reflecting the artist's fascination with the countryside around Rome. The unusual viewpoint used in the depiction of Saint Peter's shows what would have been one of the first sights of the City for Grand Tourists approaching from the North.
The Hon. John Hobart, later 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, departed England in the summer of 1745 arriving in Florence in May the following year. Having visited Florence and Naples, Mann wrote of the young Hobart that he ought 'long since to have obeyed his father's summons to return home' but that he was unwilling to 'leave his loves in Rome' (see: Horace Walpole's Correspondence, p. 421). Almost 20 years later Mann wrote to the now 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire from Florence to update him regarding this lady who was now a widow and in good health.
