Lot no. 48
48. A Meissen model of a recumbent pug dog, circa 1740
Modelled by J.J. Kaendler, his head turned towards the rear, wearing a a purple collar and bow with incised scrollwork, the coat coloured in pale brown and black, 8cm across, impressed numeral 50 (minor restoration)
Probably one of several small models of pug dogs originally modelled by Kaendler in May 1734 and recorded in his work notes, which include a pug "wie er lieget und sich umsiehet' [he lays and looks around him]; see R. Rückert, Meissener Porzellan 1710-1810, 1966, no. 1087, for a similar model in the Ansbach Residence.
