5. * A PAIR OF SMALL SATSUMA VASES
Meiji era (1868-1912), early 20th century
Each of baluster form with a medium out-turned neck, painted in polychrome enamels and gilt with six bands of decoration, from highest to lowest: gilt sayagata (keyfret patterns); gilt lotus scrolls; mallow flowers and geometric patterns; two larger bands of karako (Chinese boys) gathering and engaged in scholarly pursuits; and a band of floral and geometric ornament separated by gilt diagonal lines
