The form of the present brush, with its bulbous mouth, follows a late Ming dynasty prototype as demonstrated by a wucai brush handle from the Meiyintang Collection, published in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. II, London, 1995, pl.708. See a very similar Qianlong-marked famille rose brush handle in the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in Zhongguo taoci quanji, vol.15, Shanghai, 2000, pl.51. An identical pair of famille rose brush handles similarly bearing iron-red Qianlong seal marks were sold in Christie's Hong Kong, 30 April to 2 May 1995, lot. 677, and a single famille rose 'dragon' brush handle also with an iron-red Qianlong seal mark was sold in Sotheby's Hong Kong, 3 October 2018, lot 3616.
