Pleating is a veritable trademark and determines the majority of Isabelle de Borchgrave's pictorial and sculptural work. Inspired by the pleated fabric of Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949, textile designer), synonymous with elegance, luxury and sensuality in the early 1900s, Isabelle de Borchgrave's series of pleated works seizes on the codes of this technique and creates anamorphes on flat paper to reveal a result modified by the puckering of the paper.
The pleats illustrate tulips, one of the artist's favourite flowers. They appear in several of her works.
