52. A Meissen Böttger stoneware silver-gilt-metal-mounted vase and cover, circa 1710-13
Probably designed by Johann Jakob Irminger, of octagonal baluster form with an everted rim in the centre, the cover mounted with an acanthus-leaf frieze in silver 800 °/°°, the similar gilt-metal mount on the footrim possibly a later replacement, 13.5cm high (minor chips to inside edge of rim of vase) (2)
Provenance
The property of the Head of a European Royal House, sold at Christie's Geneva, 7 June 1968, lot 19 (part)
Possibly part of the important gift of Meissen stoneware and porcelain in 1725 from Augustus the Strong to Vittorio Amadeo of Savoy, some of which came into the possession of the last king of Italy and was sold in 1968 (see Provenance).
Two similar vases are in the historic collection of Duke Friedrich II of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg in Schloss Friedenstein, Gotha (M. Eberle, Das rote Gold, n.d., cat. nos. 120 and 121).
