Lot no. 54
54. 54AR YIANNIS TSAROUCHIS (1910-1989) The Winds signed in Greek and dated '65' (lower left) tapestry 182 x 124 cm (71.65 x 48.82 in.) Tapestry Literature Eleftheri Yenia magazine, no. 17, December 1977 (illustrated on the cover). Tsarouchis uses his iconic male subjects to illustrate the personifications of the eight major winds featured on the ancient Tower of the Winds in Athens. Captured in the artist's signature style and limited palette of earthy hues, the winged figures draw from ancient Greek sculpture, Byzantine icon painting, and folk-art iconography to create an elegant composition of austere beauty. Tsarouchis's design was transferred to wall tapestry by his student, the artist Y, Faitakis, in the workshop of the Royal Welfare Organization in 1965. Wool, linen, and silk were used as raw materials.
