Lot no. 59
59. School of Nicolas de Largillière (Paris 1656-1746) Frederick III of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg oil on canvas oil on canvas 81.7 x 64.3cm (32 3/16 x 25 5/16in). Provenance Collection Porges, Paris (according to the label on the reverse) Private collection, Netherlands This painting derives from Nicolas de Largillière's portrait of Hereditary Prince Friedrich of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, commissioned in Paris in 1720 and now at the Friedenstein Castle, Gotha. While lacking the refinement of the master's hand, it reflects the characteristic elegance of Largillière's work, with the sitter shown in military dress before a dramatic sky. Such workshop or school versions testify to the high demand for Largillière's princely portraits, which were widely admired and often reproduced during his lifetime.
