Lot no. 6
6. A Meissen figure of a farmer's wife, circa 1740-45
Modelled by J.J. Kaendler, holding an egg in her right hand and a basket of eggs over her left arm, wearing a white headscarf, yellow bodice and white skirt with a black belt, 17.9cm high (right arm and basket handle restored)
Provenance:
Gustav von Gerhardt Collection, Budapest (sold by Rudolph Lepke's Kunst-Auktions-Haus, Berlin, 7-9 November 1911, lot 150)
Although this figure is not mentioned in the manufactory work records, a similar example with fruit in the basket is included in an inventory of the collection of the Counts Solms-Laubach in 1741 as well as in an invoice that suggests that the model may date to 1738 (see V. Sigalas and M. Chilton, All Walks of Life, 2022, cat. no. 3).
