A Sèvres plate from the "service Mauresque," dated 1834 Decorated in bold colours with a central rosette surrounded by moresque motifs and strapwork, leading to architectural arches enclosing flowers on lappets surrounded by a purple ground with white foliate scrollwork, 24.2cm diam., stamped "SEVRES / 34" to reverse, various incised numerals, Plans for the Mauresque service first started in 1826, but due to staffing problems work on the service was not completed until 12 years later (Samuel Wittwer, Raffinesse & Eleganz, 2007, p. 174). The decorative scheme was designed by Jean-Charles-François Leloy and the original drawing can still be found in the archives today (inv. no 2012.1.138.1). The service was originally supposed to include 72 assiettes ordinaires and 24 plates with cameo portraits in the well, but the first entry in the sale records from 26 November 1836 shows this had been increased to 120 assiettes ordinaires, a group of plates the present lot belongs to. The service from that first delivery was split between three different recipients: Mehmet Ali, the viceroy of Egypt, M. Duponchel and the Conseil d'État. See S.
