In Paris, Soto was inspired by the abstraction of the Constructivists and Mondrian, while seeking to go beyond it by incorporating notions of time, movement and instability. He concentrated his plastic research on rhythm and the transformation of forms, and exhibited at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles.
From 1953, he used Plexiglas and played on its transparency to superimpose painted geometric wefts, creating the optical sensation of vibrating shapes through a moiré effect. These works won him the admiration of Vasarely and Denise René, who included him in the founding exhibition of kineticism in France,
"Le Mouvement", in 1955.
He is famous for his geometric paintings and constructions, playing with optical effects.
During the same decade, he began making linear, kinetic constructions using industrial and synthetic materials such as nylon, Perspex, steel and industrial paint.
