By combining this recognisable scene with a decorative, artisanal aesthetic, Delvoye plays with the viewer's expectations. Throughout his work - which also includes the Cloaca machines and Gothic sculptures - he explores how cultural systems such as religion, science and tradition influence our view of art and objects. With Trophy, he questions social roles, power and the way in which we construct our idea of 'nature'. The work oscillates between the familiar and the strange, and invites us to reflect on what we consider normal in art and culture.
