André Lanskoy was a figurative painter in the Slavic tradition, with stark interiors and a very 'flat' perspective. From 1938, his painting evolved towards abstraction. He began to produce a series in which he gradually revised his concept of the division of space. Very geometric, with large white lines cutting through his still figurative subjects, he freed himself from representation as his work progressed, breaking down the forms, transforming the figures of yesteryear into an assemblage of soft spots.
