» Achille Bonito Oliva en parlant de cette œuvre (texte pour le carton d'invitation) Born in 1949, Enzo Cucchi is an important figure in the Italian art scene of the last forty years and more particularly for the Transvanguardia movement, founded at the end of the 1970s. Achille Bonito Oliva theorized and heralded the movement which counted among its followers Mimmo Paladino, Nicola De Maria, Francesco Clemente and Sandro Chia; it advocated a "return to the traditional forms of painting and the printed image" in protest against the hegemony of conceptual and minimalist art. It was in this context that, in 1995, the artist created and exhibited Dio at the famous "Pièce Unique" gallery located 4, rue Jacques Callot, in Paris. The originality and fundamental precept of the emblematic gallery consisted in exhibiting a single work by a contemporary artist, especially created for the space, illuminated and visible day and night. Enzo Cucchi offers here a piece that questions the place of God, of the artist, as well as material and immaterial creation, in both space and time. "God is the lord of space, the artist the lord of time. But the latter must set his work within space so as to truly give it stability and weight. Enzo Cucchi accepts the weight of artistic creation: that of giving shape to the power of an echo." "Enzo Cucchi was the first to create a visual system which could reveal a shop window's inclination to becoming the set for another function: the metaphysical function of art." Achille Bonito Oliva talking about this work (text for the invitation card).
