Preceded by a foreword by André Breton in which he presents the photographer as "the man with the head of a magic lantern", La photographie n'est pas l'art presents twelve photographs that offer a broad spectrum of Man Ray's art: portraits, skyscrapers, animals, flowers, fashion photos... Sometimes akin to scientific photographs, sometimes almost abstract, they are all enigmatically captioned. For example, a negative of a praying mantis entitled Photographie intégrale et cent pour pour cent automatique, or a frog entitled Quand la nature fait des machines.
