Provenance Sale, Collin du Bocage, Paris, 10 June 2015, lot 38, where purchased by the present owner Private collection, Spain A pupil of Jean-Baptiste-Marie Pierre (1714-1789), Jollain was approved at the Académie Royale in 1765 and received as a history painter in 1773. He executed commissions for Marly and the chapel at Fontainebleau, was appointed curator of the Musée du Roi in 1788, and in 1792 participated in the commission forming the Musée National. Jollain primarily produced history paintings, allegories, and mythological subjects, often for royal or aristocratic patrons, though he also painted intimate cabinet pictures, such as the present lot and the following.
