The present lot is one of a series of studies that Israels made of the Scala Theatre in the Hague; these studies capture life behind the scenes of the famous theatre.
Israels returned to live in The Hague in 1922, taking some time to adjust to the more pedestrian pace of the city, having spent so many years in Paris. He became a regular visitor to the Scala theatre and it's cafe. As he became a regular face, he would be allowed access to the dressing rooms and back stage areas of the theatre, and managed to capture the less formal moments behind the scenes.
