Lot no. 77
77. Paul Scheurich (1883-1945): A bronze figure of Venus, circa 1921 or later Standing on abstracted seafoam, her hands across her body, her hair falling down her back in two braids, 42cm high The model of Venus is among the most widely recognised and copied models at the Meissen factory, and this bronze exemplar underscores the sculptural prowess of the original design, despite the minimalist nature of the subject matter. While it is conceivable that Paul Scheurich drew inspiration from the works of Cranach and other artists when contemplating the physiognomy of Venus, her characteristic expression of tenderness and caprice are clear hallmarks of Scheurich's artistic oeuvre. Another bronze of this model was in the collection of Prof. J. Rafael, sold in these rooms, 14 April 2022, lot 31.
