78. A BLACK-LACQUER DECORATIVE TRAY
Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, late 19th/early 20th century
The rectangular tray finished in glossy black roiro lacquer with a gold-lacquer rim, the interior decorated in gold and coloured hiramaki-e lacquer with maple leaves and seven fan-shaped cartouches depicting popular tourist sights: a waterwheel on the Yodo River, chidori (dotterels) flying overhead; sailing boats and pines at Mihonomatsubara; autumn foliage at Arashiyama; the Meoto ('Wedded Rocks') near Futami in Ise Province on New Year's Day; a flock of cranes; the Kinkakuji Pavilion in Kyoto; and the moon behind a yugao (bottle gourd) vine; with a fitted wood tomobako storage box titled and signed Inoue Hyōe
