80. # PAUL ELUARD (1895-1952) & ANDRE BRETON (1896-1966)
Abridged dictionary of surrealism
Paris, Galerie des Beaux-Arts, 1938.
In-8 paperback. Cover illustrated by Yves Tanguy.
Written by Breton and Eluard and lavishly illustrated, the Dictionnaire abrégé du surréalisme is presented in the form of brief definitions, made up of quotations from the movement's main poets, writers, painters and theorists, as well as from its tutelary figures: Nerval, Jarry, Lautréamont, Sade, Arnim, etc.
"Conceived and drawn up by André Breton and Paul Éluard, and published on the occasion of the Exposition internationale du surréalisme [...], this document [...] offers the reader, as well as a panorama of the surrealist pictorial experience throughout the world, valuable information on the poets and visual artists of the movement [...]. But its most fascinating contribution lies in the harvest of 'definitions' of both concepts and selected objects or characters, definitions borrowed both from the great ancients (Swift, Lichtenberg, Duchamp, Vaché) and from the Surrealists themselves - from Aragon to Scuténaire and Tzara - or resulting from 'collective invention' as revealed by the various 'games'" (Gérard Legrand, in Dictionnaire général du surréalisme et de ses environs, Paris, PUF, 1982, p. 130).
It includes texts by Louis Aragon, Hans Arp, Antonin Artaud, Hans Bellmer, André Breton, René Crevel, Salvador Dalí, Robert Desnos, Marcel Duchamp, Paul Éluard, Max Ernst, Maurice Heine, Georges Hugnet, Michel Leiris, Gilbert Lély, Jean Lély, Pierre Mabille, Man Ray, Édouard-Léon-Théodore Mesens, Pierre Naville, Vitezslav Nezval, Paul Nougé, Wolfgang Paalen, Henri Pastoureau, Pablo Picasso, Benjamin Péret, Jacques Prévert, Louis Scutenaire, Gui Rosey, Philippe Soupault, Tristan Tzara.
