86. A Meissen shallow bowl from the Japanese Palace, circa 1729-31
Painted in Kakiemon style with the Shiba Onko pattern, also known as "Hob in the Well", the brown-edged rim with a with a border of alternating leaves and flowers, 23.3cm diam., crossed swords mark in blue enamel, incised x inside footrim, incised Japanese Palace inventory number "N=75-/ W" (very minor flaking)

The 1770 inventory of the Japanese Palace records "Eilf Stück Teller mit braunen Rande, inwendig Pagoden und Blumen gemahlt. 9 1/2 (sic) Zoll tief. 9 3/4 Zoll in Diam: No. 75" [eleven plates with brown rims, the inside painted with Pagodas and flowers...] (quoted by Claus Bolts, "Japanisches Palais-Inventar 1770 und Turmzimmer-Inventar 1769", Keramos 153 (1996): 74.
